Fort Collins Magazine
I've been writing essays and features since 2014, and hope to continue to expand my range. Working for this "city mag," published by Evergreen Media, allows me to branch out and explore relevant topics to the Northern Colorado community, as well as myself. I plan on continuing until there's nothing left to write about.
Since June 2012 I've been fortunate to have the opportunity to write for Mind+Body Magazine, published by Gannett and distributed locally in mailboxes and racked in Fort Collins. I've written about a wide range of health and wellness topics. But my favorite pieces to write and research have been the profiles of the fantastic subjects that have graced the cover.
University of Colorado Health
I have worked as a physical therapist at University of Colorado Health since 2004. I love connecting with other humans and helping people improve their quality of life but most of all, I am drawn to introducing people to the limitless nature of their abilities. I like to think I've applied some of those lessons to my own life, especially as I've developed my writing career. In 2012, I began writing articles for the UCHealth Insider North, as well as collaborating with the marketing department, contributing online content for employees to stay current on what's going on in the health system. Some articles have been reprinted in the Fort Collins Coloradoan. My work centered on profiles of employees who are doing great things in and around northern Colorado, UCHealth's innovative programs and the ongoing evolution of healthcare. I feel fortunate to hold dual roles at UCHealth; providing world-class care and writing about it.
"Seeking Blue" is most definitely my baby. I began the enormous project of writing a novel in 2002 after taking a creative writing class at Palm Beach Community College with my wife Tanya. After years and lunch hours and weekends and nights learning how to write (and rewrite), and joining a critique group, I ended up with "Seeking Blue." In the spring of 2014, I self-published my first novel on Createspace, and have had some success both with sales on Amazon, as well as at a local bookstore in Fort Collins, and through private sales. I've also written a few short stories and published one, Buckle Bunny, in 2010 in the Owen Wister Review, the University of Wyoming's literary magazine.
My first official published material and a source of great pride to me was my parenting column, Wee Wisdom, that appeared every other Sunday in the Fort Collins Coloradoan from 2009 to 2013. The premise was taking funny/clever/witty/enlightening things that kids say to glean a message to apply to parenting specifically, and life in general. It's no stretch to say that writing my column (as well as the process of developing an idea, pitching it, failing, succeeding, the task of creating something new every week, and receiving feedback from editors and readers) was the first and most crucial catalyst in my writing career. Most of my columns are available on my blog, The Dad Life. (Check out the link up top.)
